Why Chimney Sweeping is Important

How I Clean Your Chimney
Prior to my arrival please remove any items from your mantel piece & hearth & remove any unburnt fuel from your fire. As well as cleaning your chimney a standard chimney sweep includes a visual inspection of your appliance, flue, chimney stack, pot & terminal which following this assessment allows me to select the appropriate chimney sweeping method to clean your flue, be it the traditional way with rods & brushes or with modern rotary power sweeping technology/spring loaded brush systems.
Your fireplace will then be effectively sealed & the appropriately powered & filtered vacuum cleaner chosen to eliminate any soot from entering your home, sheeting will always be laid down to capture any soot or debris that may come out of your chimney.
Following your sweep you’ll receive a Chimney Sweeping Certificate that will be recognised by your insurance company which will record the result of your sweep & any safety advice given.

Many people believe that chimney sweeping is only required within our homes, however, don’t forget about your business when your scheduling chimney sweeping services.
Whether it’s a stove or a fireplace within a public house or hotel or a wood-fired pizza oven within a restaurant your chimney will need to be swept.
Does Your Pizza Oven Need To Be Swept?
Whilst it may seem unusual to sweep the chimney of a pizza oven it produces the same byproducts of combustion as any domestic fire.
The chimney of a commercial pizza oven flue will need to be swept at least once per year, if not more. This can be influenced by how long and frequently pizza ovens are left burning & they may even need to be swept as soon as every 12 weeks; burning up to 12 hours every day for up to 7 days a week-along with a much larger fuel load which can cause a rapid accumulation of soot, ash & creosote.
Sweeping a pizza oven flue is both similar & different from sweeping a standard fireplace. Pizza ovens are much larger than residential fireplaces, which means that they take longer to clean & may require specialised brushes. The much larger fuel loads, longer burning periods and presence of food particles can all necessitate longer chimney sweeps.
Rotary Power Sweeping Technology
Please note I am equipped with rotary power sweeping technology, however, although taking much of the physical effort out of chimney sweeping it is not recommended in all circumstances. If used incorrectly it can predominately remove parging (the traditional method of finishing the surface of a chimney interior) & cement from the brickwork in your flue. This can cause damage to your flue’s integrity potentially shortening its life & thus contribute to your flue becoming unsafe to use. Your chimney sweep should be equipped, experienced & trained well enough to be able to clean your chimney just as effectively without it!
Your chimney is designed to withstand sweeping as part of its routine maintenance. If for any reason faulty pots, cowls, brickwork, linings or components become dislodged during this process A Complete Sweep cannot accept responsibility for these occurrences.
CCTV Inspections
The inside of your chimney is of course not visible beyond the first few feet of your fireplace or as far as can be seen by peering down the chimney pot!
I can inspect the whole length of your chimney with a purpose built professional infra red camera system, with full record & playback capabilities to identify faults or obstructions. CCTV can be used for a number of applications:
- If you have moved to a new house, to perform vital safety checks before bringing a flue back into use.
- Assessing damage following a chimney fire.
- Inspections of blockages, birds nests or internal faults & collapsed brickwork.
- Producing video evidence for claims.
Following this service you’ll receive a report of it’s findings & I can also provide you with a full copy of the camera inspection.
